Increased security has led to a 20% drop in the number of crimes committed at Ninewells Hospital in the past year, according to police figures.

Reports of thefts at the hospital, in Dundee, have also fallen by about half.

The reduction was put down to an increase in the number of CCTV cameras and police patrols.

Security attendants have also been specifically trained to deal with violent or aggressive patients, visitors or staff.

Tayside Police crime prevention officer Pc Colin Brough said: "The images obtained [from CCTV] are regularly used by police officers in their inquiries and there have been a number of crimes solved and perpetrators identified as a result.

"Therefore, CCTV and the implementation of the other security measures put in place have led to Ninewells being a safer place for patients, visitors and staff alike.

"There is no doubt that criminals are aware of the security in place at the hospital and that the chance of them being caught is extremely high."

However, Pc Brough reminded people that it is important they do not leave their property unattended, especially valuables such as purses, bags and money.

"I would ask that all patients, visitors and staff take a few moments to think about their personal belongings while at the hospital," he said.

"After all, the criminal needs the opportunity. Deny them the opportunity and you have prevented a crime."

Ninewells site manager Brian Main warned that people should be aware the cameras are watching.

He said: "The extensive CCTV coverage in place means that people responsible for committing offences have been swiftly identified and brought to justice.

"In addition to introducing more CCTV and access door controls, Tayside Police have helped greatly with crime prevention surveys of various departments around the hospital and provided us with advice on the best preventative measures."
